♪ ♪ Woman: I must have crossed this bridge a million times.
But the first time I remember was when I was 5.
That was when my brothers, the twins, Mars and Alex, were born.
My parents had crossed over from Eagle Pass to Piedras Negras the day before 'cause they had better hospitals on the Mexico side.
And when my cousin drove me over to meet them for the first time, I thought the bridge and the river were a magical portal.
♪ ♪ I feel close to Mars here.
♪ ♪ I'm pretty sure he's this dragonfly.
♪ ♪ [Waves rolling] I always planned to make movies with my three brothers.
With Paco, the oldest, and the twins.
But Mars and I only ever got to shoot one thing together.
We were all going to the beach.
And as soon as we got there, Alex went straight to the water.
I was entranced by this view of him, and I wanted so badly to record it.
So I asked Mars for his camera, and we stood together as I pointed it at Alex.
[Waves crashing] And, of course, Mars had had the exact same thought right before he walked up to me.
And had taken a photo of me watching Alex, Alex watching the sea.
[Wind blowing] When I got the call, I tried desperately to rewind through my memories to be with him again.
But I couldn't.
[Wind blowing] Since then, I've only had this carousel of the same few fragmented moments going round and round.
♪ But Mars is gone now.
And all I'm left with is his camera.
♪ Now that I'm back here, can I find my memories of us?
[Hazard lights ticking] Can I find you?
I promised you I'd try.
♪ ♪ The way, we know the way ♪ ♪ We've seen the way ♪ ♪ We'll show the way to get you back home ♪ ♪ To the peace where you belong ♪ [Birds chirping] Robie: Everything looks smaller than I remember it.
And sounds quieter.
[Birds chirping] [Distant piano playing] ♪ ♪ [Piano stops abruptly] I haven't really been back to Eagle Pass since I left for college.
I was ready to get the [Bleep] out at 18.
I wanted to go to the city and reinvent myself.
And shed this little place off.
Man: I was sorry to hear about your brother.
Yeah, thanks.
It was hard.
That's been part of like, the hard part of moving back that he was a film student too.
We were always going to like work together.
Sucks.
[Cow moos] [Cows mooing] Robie: Our childhood feels like a dream.
There's very little trace of it.
Because our parents weren't so great at documenting.
They were the type that would take photos with no film in the camera.
There are no videos, or drawings, or any of my brilliantly written teen journals.
So what did it look like to grow up here together?
Maybe if I look for what I know about this place, it can make my past feel more real.

I didn't get it from there.
I just got it because we were talking in class about like dreams, and...
So you're saying when we go to sleep, we go to like another... Yeah, what if we go to another dimension or something?
I don't know how you sleep with these.
[Barking] 'Cause, like, if you press them, They're going to make a sound and they're hard.
I put it over here.
Robie: I've always had vivid dreams.
And waking up every morning, it would take me a moment to figure out what was real.
So after Mars died, I tried so hard not to sleep.
I didn't want to dream that he was still here.
I was terrified to wake up to relive the shock every day.
[Marching band playing] ♪ ♪ [Whistling] [People cheering] [Marching band playing] ♪ ♪ Man: Camilo Pedraza, the ball carrier.
[Indistinct] First time for the Bulldogs [indistinct] 39 yards.

It's like I'm 15 again.

But Mars keeps slipping away.

Es que me parte el alma ♪ ♪ Que muera la esperanza ♪ Robie: When we were planning Mars' memorial, I asked his friends for fun videos of him 'cause I couldn't bear the thought of someone making some stupid, sad slideshow.

And I found a treasure trove of moments that I never even realized he had been collecting over the years.

Robie: My cousin Mariel and I have the exact same birthday.
Just one year apart.
She lived in Piedras.
So I always thought of her as my Mexicana mirror.
I felt like everyone was constantly comparing us.

But we both loved Selena.
And we'd sing "Como la flor" at the top of our lungs on repeat in Mariel's bathroom.
And then fall over laughing at ourselves.

I laughed along with them while I hid my chipped red nails in my sleeves.
Girl 1: I have to go to New Mexico in a week.
Girl 2: Are you driving over there?

It's a 10 hour drive.
Girl 2: What's the longest that everybody's like, drived somewhere?
Girl 1: Um, Disney.
Girl 2: Mine was like two days.
Girl 1: Torreón?
Girl 2: Nope.
Yeah, yeah, [indistinct].
Can I put like Tajín in all of it?
Yeah.
Claro.
My birthday is, um, the third week of school.
My quince's going to start like a week after school starts.
And I don't want anyone to mind my embarrassing drunk tíos and tías.
Robie: I rejected my parents offer to have a quinceañera.
The last thing I wanted was to party with my family.
I wanted to take a trip instead.
But the trip never happened.
Now I just keep imagining little Mars and Alex on the dance floor.

Robie: The twins didn't get the memo that it was way cooler to be Mexican.
They didn't go to Piedras to play American football, like Paco did.
Coach in background: That bouncing one is yours.
Robie: They didn't wear those unbuttoned dress shirts or slick back their hair.
And their Spanish wasn't as smooth as mine or Paco's.
Coach: ¡Baja!

[Yells] [Boys laugh] Coach: Esa que va botando es tuya.

[Birds chirping] Robie: So, I felt like they got in the way of me fitting in with the cool kids from Piedras.
Coach: Pick up your feet, guys!

Robie: Being around them felt like social suicide.
It was always so embarrassing how Americanized they were.

says the junk in the yard ♪ Robie: Wow, dude.
But I wish I could hear him now more than ever.

Buy!"
says the sign in the shop window ♪ Robie: I don't know what I'm doing.

Says the junk in the yard ♪ Robie: I don't know why I still can't remember him.

She sent Alex a beautiful note after he died, about how that night he had left an impression on her, and how he moved though the world with wisdom and warmth.
[Bouncing basketball] [Distant chatting] [Water flowing] Alright, Robie, are you ready?
Robie: Sí, lista.

Robie: I just feel like we've... Like, I have this idea, this expectation of what I thought this would feel like, being here.

Robie: I don't know, I just thought that being home and you being here and being with Mom and Paco and going to all these, like, familiar spaces and, like, familiar experiences, would sort of connect something.
Just like getting this flood of memories and... And I just, like, I feel like I expected to be like... like Marcelo to just like show up and...
I feel like he was... effortlessly showing up with his camera.

And I'm just like trying to use the camera as an invisibility cloak.
Meanwhile, Mars was like using it and being there and being with everybody and, like... Yeah, I don't know.
Alex: I think that's...
I mean, it makes total sense.
I think it's okay to have frustrations with not feeling satisfied.
Maybe we're not getting to relive the memories that we had when we were little, but we're getting to experience things that remind us of Mars.
Robie: Yeah.
Alex: I don't know if you're ever going to feel satisfied with the memories that you have.
Robie: Yeah.
Maybe I just need to think about it differently.
[Train whistle sound] [Birds chirping] Mia, guess what.
Yeah?
One time in Eagle Pass there was a rainbow.
I didn't see it because I wasn't living here.
Umm, what should we do, Mia?
Maybe... Do you want to do some chalk stuff?
I brought chalk.
Uh, yeah.
Zoe.
Robie: I was in kindergarten when I made my first real friend, Kristina.
Mia, look.

It says, "Zoe loves Mia."
Now I know.
Zoe: I'm looking up at the sky.
I'm looking at all the birds.
Robie: On the first day of school, our teacher told us to choose our best friends for the year.
[Yells] Maybe I can draw your eyes.
Robie: We looked at each other, slapped our hands on each other's desks, and were inseparable after that.
We sang the songs about being proud to be an American and learned to deeply love Texas and blue bonnets, the state flower.
Zoe: Guess what.
Mia: What?
Zoe: That pond is drying up.
So that's why I wanted to bring you here.

[Children squealing] The moment I realized that 17 years of my life had passed by.
[Children chatting distantly] I was playing with Mars and Alex.
We were running around upstairs in circles dancing to Kylie Minogue.

And we were creating "dance fusion," we called it.
♪ ♪ It feels like the end of a time that once felt endless.
♪ And I just want to stay here a little bit longer.
♪ ♪ ♪ ♪ ♪ [Thunder rumbling] ♪ And then I had many dream-filled nights ♪ made up of all the moments that I have been collecting.
Or maybe Mars had been collecting.
