The Mars Science Laboratory Project carried a land rover with it to the surface of the planet. On board the rover is a radiation detector designed by scientists at the Southwest Research Institute in San Antonio. Their job is to protect humans visiting Mars in the future. The detector will begin analyzing solar flares and galactic rays to find out how much cancer risk there is for future visitors
